There are a lot of games that use stamina bars very well. To note- I am not against the use of a stamina bar. Running off to a corner to recharge is not fun.Īs it is, I (and a lot of others) just don’t find it fun to spend more than half the fight waiting for that stamina bar to start to recharge.

This robs the combat of the fluidity it should have. devolves into wailing on an enemy or boss and then dodging, it feels like playing a turn based rpg in action form, time to attack for 2 seconds, time to dodge for 4-6 seconds while the stamina recharges, rinse, repeat.

Regular attacks shouldn’t use stamina at all, if a level of precision is required, an enforced short pause between weapon strikes would work fine. everything makes use of a lot of the secondary weapons not really a thing unless range is needed. I think the core is there, but the stamina system just isn’t implemented well, you can’t play with spacing when you don’t have any range for your club, the aerial attack is so slow that you have to map out both your own trajectory and the trajectory of your enemy and press the button at the same time as you start your jump, which equates to it never being worth it to use because it’s clunky and unresponsive. I dunno, I see a lot of the comments about how awful the combat is, but I'm really enjoying it, and personally I feel like it fits the game's setting, background, and overall design. Gail isn't a superhero, she's a young girl with a bat. Finding places to charge or replenish stamina gives the fights a feel of tension.Īnd this is how the original was too, the slow attacks were part of the game design. Small hitbox and lots of startup on the aerial, so you have to do your aerial on the rise, your decision making has to be on point. Spacing and repositioning are super important, finding your spots is more important than mashing a button repeatedly. It reminds me a lot of like, NES Castlevania, or Zelda II, where your moves are slower and your mobility is lower, so you have to be careful and precise and safe. It feels like there's a lot of people who harp on the combat, and maybe they never played the original, but this felt intentional from the designer.
